Rail service disrupts as 1 killed in train mishap in Akaa

One person was killed a train accident at Akaa, a municipality in Pirkanmaa region on Wednesday evening, police said.

The accident took place at about 5:20 p.m. when a train knocked down the person at the level crossing in the area and the person died on the spot.

Responding to an alarm, rescue service people and police rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the victim.

Police, however, did not divulge details about the accident and the identity of the deceased.

The Accident Investigation Board and Police are investigating into the case to find out the reason behind the accident.

Meanwhile, rail communications suspended on the tract for about one hour following the accident. Later rail communication restored but the trains were delayed by 20 minutes to 80 minutes, local media reported, quoting national railway operator VR.

Vehicular movement on the crossing was also disrupted for about one hour.

A significant number of train accidents took place in Finland during the recent period.

On August 3, 2025, two people were killed in a collision between a train and a van at a level crossing in Siilinjärvi, a municipality under North Savo region.

On August 5, 2025, one person was killed in a collision between a train and a van at a level crossing in Loimaa, a municipality in Western Finland.

Another person was killed in a train accident in Helsinki on July 18, 2025.
