Man killed train mishap in Joensuu

One person was killed in a train accident in Joensuu, a municipality in the Eastern part of the country on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The accident took place at about 12:25 p.m. when the train knocked down the middle-aged man at a junction in between Kitee, and Joensuu, about 20 kilometres away from the Joensuu city centre.

The person died on the spot.

Responding to an alarm, Rescue Service people and police rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the victim.

Police, however, did not divulge detail about the accident and the identity of the deceased.

The Accident Investigation Board and Police are investigating into the case to find out the reason behind the accident.

Several train accidents causing human casualties took place in Finland this year.

Earlier in October, one person was killed in a train accident in Jämsä.

On September 27, a woman was killed in a train accident at a level crossing in Turku.

On September 21, 2025, one person was killed in a train mishap in Vaasa .

On August 3, 2025, two people were killed in a collision between a train and a van at a level crossing in Siilinjärvi, a municipality under North Savo region.

On August 5, 2025, one person was killed in a collision between a train and a van at a level crossing in Loimaa, a municipality in Western Finland.

Another person was killed in a train accident in Helsinki on July 18, 2025.

Frequent accidents on the level crossings in early August 2025 have raised questions about the safe vehicular movement through the crossings in Finland.
