The main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) MP elected from Järvenpää died at about 11:00 a.m., said police adding that they did not suspect any crime link to the death.

But a Finnish language evening tabloid Iltalehti (IL) reported that a lawmaker allegedly committed suicide in the parliament building.

Police are investigating into the incident to find out the reason behind the death of the MP.

National broadcaster Yle, quoting a social media post of the lawmaker in June said that Peltonen had been suffering from different diseases including kidney complication.

President Alexander Stubb, Speaker Jussi Halla-aho, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and leader of the opposition in Parliament and Chair of the SDP Antti Lindtman expressed profound shock at the demise of the lawmaker.

“Today (Tuesday) we received a tragic news from the Parliament. My deep condolences to Eemeli Peltonen's loved ones and wish fortitude to bear the loss,” Stubb wrote in a post on his social media platform X in Finnish.

He also said that Peltonen was known as a competent and hard-working MP and his work was respected in the party.

“On behalf of the Parliament, I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Representative Peltonen. Peltonen was a well-liked colleague, who was respected across party lines,” Speaker of Parliament Halla-aho wrote in a post on social media X.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo expressed his shock at a press briefing in Kajaani during a parliamentary group meeting of his party Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP).

"At the same time, we send strength to the family, loved ones and colleagues. This deeply affects all of us," said Orpo.

Terming the death as very shocking, SDP Chair Antti Lindtman said that it is very difficult to accept that the beloved friend and colleague Eemeli is no more.

“Our deepest condolences to Eemeli's family and all, who are close to him,” Lindtman wrote in his X.

He also said that Eemeli did not demanded anything for himself and always worked for the common interest of Finland and the party.
