Together with cities all over Europe, the cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Turku, Tampere, and Oulu participated in a minute of silence for the victims of the coronavirus pandemic that started one year ago.
The joint commemoration took place on Wednesday at 13:00 Finnish local time, said the City of Helsinki in a press release.
Earlier, on 17 March, the city network Eurocities invited everyone to a European minute of silence.
The minute of silence is an initiative of Eurocities, of which Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Turku, Tampere, and Oulu are members.
To date, 811 people have died of Covid-19 disease in Finland and in Europe there are a total of almost 900,000 deaths.
“Europe needs a joint moment of reflection,” said Eurocities President Dario Nardella, who is the mayor of Florence.
Eurocities is a network of 198 European cities from 38 countries, representing 130 million people.
