Finland condemns violence at US capitol

President Sauli Niinistö, Prime Minister Sanna Marin, and Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto condemned the protest styaged at the US capitol on Wednesday, after some supporters of the Republican Incumbent President Donald Trump broke into the building, and forced electoral vote counting to come to a halt.

In separate twitter posts they said the democracy should be upheld.

“Every moment is coming with new impossibility from Washington: an unbelievable democratic nightmare is going on there,” the president wrote in Finnish in his twitter post late Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sanna Marin also expressed serious concern at the protest.

“The attack on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC is very serious and worrying. It shows how important it is to firmly and strongly defend democracy at all times,” wrote the PM in her post in Finnish.

Expressing concern at the incident, Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto urged to stop the violence immediately.

“It is shocking news from the United States, one of oldest democratic countries in the world. The violence should be ended immediately,” wrote Haavisto in his twitter post in Finnish.

The US capitol was breached by protesters on Wednesday afternoon, a tense situation that forced proceedings to count Electoral College votes cast in the 2020 presidential election come to a halt.

Lawmakers are reportedly being evacuated from the House and the Senate, as protesters supporting the outgoing President Donald Trump, a Republican, forced their way into the building, which has been placed under a lockdown, and entered the chambers.

“All buildings within the Capitol Complex, Capitol: External security threat, no entry or exit is permitted, stay away from exterior windows, doors. If outside, seek cover,” reported Xinhua quoting a message from the Capitol Police.
