President Sauli Niinistö on Sunday said that the US government under the leadership of Joe Biden is likely to return the country to the table to discuss various international issues such as climate change and coronavirus pandemic.
Niinistö, who had already congratulated US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on their election on late Saturday night, addressed a press conference at the Presidential Palace on Sunday morning.
He, however, does not see any major change to the bilateral relations between Finland and USA following the change in the government, reported the national broadcaster Yle.
“Biden’s election as the US president may be termed the return of the country to the table. We hope to see particularly a return to the Paris Climate Agreement,” said Niinistö.
He also believes that the USA will engage again in international cooperation with the United Nations and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
He pointed out that the Finland-USA bilateral relations started to boost during the tenure of the Barack Obama administration, when Biden was the vice president of the country.
Earlier, on late Saturday night, Niinistö congratulated the newly elected US president Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris for their victory in the Presidential elections.
“I have congratulated @JoeBiden on his election. I look forward to continuing to build on our strong partnership with him and @KamalaHarris,” Niinistö wrote in the official Twitter page of the Office of the Finnish President.
