Parents to get access to children's medical info

Parents will get access to the medical records of their under-age children from next year, reported national broadcaster Yle.
The parents access will be continued until the children reach to 18 years.
The government is now updating its nationwide electronic patient database Omakanta to allow parents access to their children’s medical records.
The system has come under fire for blocking minors’ medical information from guardians once children reach the age of 10.
“Parents will, however, not be given full access to their kids’ medical files. Instead, doctors will on a case-by-case basis evaluate whether information should be shared with parents, depending on the child’s maturity. Youngsters can, for example, ask that information regarding birth control be kept private,” said the Yle report.
"The general rule is that all information will be available," said the report, quoting Mari Holmroos from social insurer Kela as saying.
