The amount of recycling plastic goods in the country increased significantly in 2019, reported national broadcaster Yle, quoting regional waste management agencies.

Finnish people recycled plastic products at double or even triple than the amount of the previous year, said the report.

Recycling in Vantaa rose more than 180 percent, said the report, quoting a waste management expert.

The amount of the recycling increased significantly at the big cities and the capital region saw the highest increase in plastic recycling.

About 90 percent more plastic was recycled in Helsinki and in Espoo, while Vantaa saw a meteoric 186 percent increase in the reuse of plastic, said the report.

Operations chief Pertti Tammivuori from Finnish Packaging Recycling Ltd (Rinki) told Yle that improved eco-consciousness has heightened awareness of the benefits of sorting trash.

"People are waking up. A big part of that is national broadcaster Yle's 'I Love Muovi' [I Love Plastic] campaign," said the report, quoting Tammivuori as saying.
