A passenger gave birth to a baby onboard an intercity train on Tuesday evening, local media reported, quoting national railway operator VR on Wednesday.
The birth took place on the Vaasa bound IC49 intercity train from Helsinki and a co-passenger assisted the mother in this regard, reported a leading Finnish language evening tabloid Ilta-Sanomat.
Responding to a call from the train an ambulance was waiting for the newborn when the train reached Seinäjoki and took the parents and baby to hospital.
The railway staff handled the situation smoothly and professionally.
“It is a great news and exceptional situation. VR warmly congratulates the family on the special moment,” said VR Communications Manager Tiina Nummenmaa to Ilta-Sanomat.
National broadcaster Yle, quoting Nummenmaa said that there is no known record of giving birth to a baby on a VR train in the past.
