The City Council of Vantaa on Monday approved the reviewed project plan for the Vantaa Light Rail, said the City of Vantaa on Tuesday.

The Vantaa light rail alliance and Country´s airports operator Finavia will work together to develop a plan for the placement options of the final stop at the airport, said Finavia in a press release on Tuesday.

The Light Rail alliance, in cooperation with Finavia, is preparing a supplementary plan for the tramway in the area near the airport terminal.

The plan will include a new terminal stop with related arrangements as well as a cost estimate.

A decision on the location of the airport terminal stop will be made by the end of 2027.

"We are very pleased with the decision that the political decision-makers of Vantaa were ready to give the Vantaa light rail alliance a mandate to plan the light rail up to the airport area together with Finavia. This way, the benefits brought by the tramway can be utilized as soon as possible," said Tero Anttila, Deputy Mayor of the City of Vantaa’s Urban Environment Department in the press release.

"The airport’s different stop options have been discussed in good cooperation with the light rail alliance. From Finavia’s point of view, the options to be discussed now, on the basis of which a more detailed plan will be developed, can certainly be implemented at the airport," said Ulla Serlenius, Senior Vice President of Commercial and Real Estate Development of Finavia.

For the supplementary plan, the light rail alliance and Finavia are investigating two different location options for the light rail line’s final stop.

The first option is located on Terminaalitie and the second option on Teletie. The aim of the investigation is to gain a good understanding of how the different options support a good customer experience and smooth traffic connections in the core area of the airport and how they will affect the development of the airport area in the coming decades.
