Finland supports EU accession move of Moldova

President Alexander Stubb on Friday expressed Finland´s support to Moldova on its way toward European Union membership.
“Moldova and Finland are close partners. Moldova's future lies in Europe, and Finland supports Moldova on its path toward EU membership. Together, we are working for Europe's future,” Stubb wrote in a post on his social media platform X after a meeting with his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu in Helsinki.
The Presidents discussed bilateral relations between Finland and Moldova, Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, security situation in Europe and transatlantic relations during their meeting, said the President Office in a press release.
Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, Sandu sought Finland´s support for accession to the European Union of her country.
“This year Moldova formally began accession negotiations. We are reforming and meeting every condition on merit. We count on Finland's support to take the next steps this autumn,” Sandu said at the press conference.
Stubb said that Moldova's expertise and experience in countering Russian hybrid influence are valuable to and the Finnish model of comprehensive security also provides a solid foundation for deepening cooperation.
The Presidents also took part in the opening discussion at the Helsinki Security Forum organised by Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA).
During her visit, the Moldovan President also met with Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Speaker of the Parliament Jussi Halla-aho.
