The four-party alliance government led by conservative Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP) has taken an initiative to bring changes to the child benefit system in the country.
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health prepared a proposal for fixing a flat rate of 100 euros per child per month, with the amount keeping same for each subsequent child, said an official press release on Monday.
Earlier the government formed a ministerial body in November 2025 and the committee submitted its report proposing the flat rate payment for each subsequent child.
Presently the amount of child benefits varies based on number of the child. The amount is 94.88 euros per month for the first child, 104.84 euros for the second, 133.79 euros for the third, 173.24 euros for the fourth, and 192.69 euros from the fifth onwards.
The government also proposed removal of the payment of supplemental benefits, such as the single parent additional allowance of 73.30 euros per child and the extra for children under 3, which currently paid at 26.00 euros per child.
The government also proposed that the single parent supplement to be replaced by an equitable rise in child maintenance allowance and other benefits such as general housing allowance and study grant guardian supplement on a case-by-case basis.
The proposal, however, extended the payment period of the child benefit until 18 year-old, which is now until the child is 17-year-old.
Social Security Minister Sanni Grahn-Laasonen said that the government's proposals would not be implemented during the regime of the present government.
