President Alexander Stubb on Thursday held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian and discussed the situation in Iran and the Middle East.

“I had a call with President of Iran Dr Pezeshkian. We discussed the situation in Iran and the Middle East. A ceasefire and a diplomatic solution are urgently needed,” Stubb wrote in a post on his social media platform X.

The President said that he emphasized the need to end the strikes on neighbouring countries and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait Hormuz.

“Despite the disagreements, it is important to maintain dialogue,” Stubb added.

Earlier on Wednesday Stubb held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump and discussed various issues including NATO, Iran and Ukraine.

On Feb. 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and several other Iranian cities, killing Iran's then Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders and civilians.

Iran responded with waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and U.S. assets in the Middle East, while tightening control over the Strait of Hormuz by restricting passage by vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States.
