The trade union of the energy industry sector (Sähköliitto) on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the countrywide three-day strike scheduled to be observed from February 14 called by the Industrial Union (Teollisuusliitto).

The Industrial Union on February 2 announced the strike protesting against the cuts in employee rights and social welfare undertaken by the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP) led four-party alliance government.

The strike of the energy sector workers may disrupt the electricity generation and supply at the power plants in the country.

About 500 union workers will participate in the strike at Olkiluoto and Loviisa nuclear power plants and hydro-power plants operated by Kemijoki Oy, Pohjolan Voima Oy, Tornionlaakson Voima Oy , Fortum Power and Heat Oy.

The strikes of Industrial Union will involve around 60,000 industrial workers. When they take place, these strikes will bring a large share of Finnish industry to a standstill.

The strikes, however, will not hamper the emergency work or to work that is necessary for the protection of life and health.
