JJ of Austria won the 69th Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland with the song Wasted Love, securing Austria’s first Eurovision Song Contest win since 2014, said European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in a news release.

Finnish singer Erika Vikman secured 11th place in the contest with her son “Ich Komme” in the grand final held from late Saturday night to early Sunday night.

JJ won the contest with a points tally of 436.

As is traditional at the Eurovision Song Contest, scores were awarded first from the juries, followed by the dramatic reveal of the public televote.

Wasted Love triumphed in the jury vote with a score of 258 points. This was followed by a televote tally of 176 points.

A countertenor with a distinctive voice that can reach soprano heights, JJ has already made a name for himself in the classical music world.

The singer, whose real name is Johannes Pietsch, was born in Vienna in 2001 and grew up in Dubai before returning to Vienna in 2016.
