The Frankfurt Book Fair - the world's largest gathering of the book trade - opens its doors to the public on Friday in the western German city, reported dpa.

Visitors can choose from more than 4,000 exhibitors presenting their latest publications.

The programme for the third day of the fair also includes the presentation of the German Youth Literature Prize.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and author and former politician Michel Friedman plan to speak at an event on the topic "Is democracy dying in the tug-of-war between freedom and security?"

For the first time, the number tickets available for Saturday - usually the fair's busiest day - have been limited. This is to ensure a pleasant and safe experience at the fair, a spokesman said. The number of tickets available was not disclosed.

This is the 76th Frankfurt Book Fair since the end of World War II. More than 1,000 authors and speakers are scheduled to appear at 650 events on 15 stages over the course of the fair.
