Pöykkölä is a district of Rovaniemi in the city’s south-east where residents of the comparatively less populated district get civic facilities through various services units.

But they still need to go the city center for some other services although there are daycare centers, kindergartens, K-Market and barbecue kiosk.

The Forestry Museum, said to be the only museum in the world on foresting and the history of forest work in Finnish Lapland, saves, conducts research on, maintains and features the cultural heritage of Lapland’s forestry.

The Rovaniemi Week will be observed in September 2–8 and the theme of this year is ‘Kotikulmilla’ — city districts and its outskirts.

Before the celebrations, the Daily Finland spoke to some residents of the Pöykkölä district to know of their opinions about the locality and the neighborhood.

Minna, who is a nurse and lives in Pöykkölä, described her locality as peaceful and said that she was very happy about the neighborhood.

“It is a very nice area. Lot of families with children live here. We live here peacefully. There are grocery store and a nice beach. I like the beach very much, especially in summer time. But I need to go to the city center to collect some necessary things. It is not a problem for me as I have a car,” said the 40-year-old nurse.

Another Pöykkölä resident, Jani, said, “It is a nice area to live in. We have shops, kindergarten, ski track, beach, etc. What I like most is that the nature is very close. I frequently visit the Rovaniemi center and bring all necessary things for me. I do not face any difficulty having lived here.”

A Somalian immigrant, who has been living at the area for more than two years, expressed his satisfaction over the civic amenities.

“I have lived in Finland for four years, with two years in Pöykkölä, Rovaniemi. I go to gymnasium, which is free. I buy my regular commodities from the K-Market. The hospital and city center are not far away. I enjoy visiting the city center by bicycle almost everyday in the summer. Sometimes, especially in the winter, I use the bus service to travel to and from the city center,” said Mohammad Salah, a 38-year-old man.

Another resident, Katariina Suomalainen, a student, said, “I like my neigborhood very much as the area is very calm and peaceful. I also feel secure to have lived here as it is safe. I love the beautiful nature, ski track and the beach very much. I am happy about everything we have here.”
