Finland posts €910m trade deficit in May

The trade balance was in deficit of EUR 910 million in May 2026, according to the preliminary statistics of international trade in goods released by Finnish Customs on Thursday.

In January-May, the aggregated deficit amounted to almost EUR 3.0 billion.

In May 2025, the trade balance was EUR 5 million in deficit and in January-May of the same year, the aggregated deficit was EUR 1.0 billion.

According to the statistics, the value of Finnish exports increased by 7.5 per cent in May year-on-year. The value of Finnish exports was EUR 6.4 billion.

Export volume declined by 3.7 per cent but export prices increased by 11.6 per cent year-on-year.

The volume of imports increased by 9.3 per cent in May and import prices increased by 13.3 per cent compared to May 2025.

The value of Finnish imports increased by 22.7 per cent. Value of imports was EUR 7.3 billion.

In January-May 2026, the aggregated value of exports increased by 8.9 per cent and the value of imports by 14.8 per cent year-on-year.

In January-May 2026, year-over-year change of the aggregated average for export volume was 2.0 per cent. The corresponding figure for import volume was 7.7 per cent.

Value of exports to EU member states decreased by 0.3 per cent, but grew to non-EU countries by 19.2 per cent in May compared to the same month the previous year.

The volume of exports to EU countries decreased by 10.8 per cent but increased to non-EU countries by 7.6 per cent during the same time.

Calculated from the beginning of the year, the value of exports to EU countries grew by 3.7 per cent and to non-EU countries by 16.6 per cent.

The volume of exports to EU member states decreased by 2.9 per cent, but the volume of exports to non-EU countries increased by 9.6 per cent calculated according to the year-over-year change of the aggregated average of export volume.

The volume of imports from EU member states increased by 2.9 per cent in May and from non-EU countries by 17.3 per cent year-over-year.

In January-May, the volume of imports from EU member states increased by 5.3 per cent and from non-EU countries by 10.8 per cent calculated according to the year-over-year change of the aggregated average of import volume.
