Hard coal consumption rises by 10% in 2022

The consumption of hard coal increased by 10 per cent in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to Statistics Finland's preliminary data.
The consumption of hard coal as a fuel in the generation of electricity and heat and in manufacturing amounted to 2,015 thousand tonnes, corresponding to 51 petajoules in energy content.
In 2022, altogether 51 per cent less hard coal was consumed than on average in the 2000s.
In 2022, a total of 2,015 thousand tonnes of hard coal was consumed as a fuel in the generation of electricity and heat and in manufacturing, which was 10 per cent more than one year earlier.
Despite the growth, the trend of coal consumption has long been declining and the number of plants using hard coal has continued to fall. In 2022, altogether 51 per cent less hard coal was consumed than on average in the 2000s.
The consumption of hard coal increased most in the second quarter of 2022, by 26 per cent compared to the previous year. In the last quarter, consumption grew by 13 per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2021.
The consumption of hard coal increased in 2022 in electricity and heat production as main activity. The stocks of hard coal amounted to 1,493 thousand tonnes at the end of December 2022, which was 23 per cent more than one year earlier.
