18 killed, scores injured in flash floods in Tanzania

At least 18 people were killed and scores of others injured early Wednesday after flash floods swept through homes in southern Tanzania, police said on Wednesday, reported Xinhua.

The incident occurred in Rungwe District in Mbeya Region in Tanzania's southern highlands following heavy rains accompanied by strong winds.

The Mbeya regional police commander, Benjamin Kuzaga, told the state-run Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation that the victims' houses were washed away by the sudden floods.

He said the death toll includes four adults and 14 children.

According to Kuzaga, the injured were taken to various health centers for treatment, while rescue efforts were ongoing to assist affected residents.

Authorities have warned communities in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue in parts of the southern highlands.
