Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday that a diplomatic note was sent to Washington to demand clarification regarding the death of a Mexican national who was in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), reported Xinhua.

"This is not the first case. And this diplomatic note was stronger because we must always protect the lives of our compatriots," she said at her daily press conference.

She also added that the Mexican government is supporting the family of the victim with lawyers so they can file a complaint with U.S. authorities.

Sheinbaum also reiterated the Mexican government's stance in defense of migrants residing in the United States.

According to ICE, at least five people died in January while in custody, all men between the ages of 34 and 68 who were originally from Honduras, Cambodia, Mexico and Nicaragua.
