Iran's Alpine skier Hossein Saveh Shemshaki has tested positive for an anabolic androgenic steroid in the first confirmed doping case at the Beijing Winter Olympics, reported Xinhua.

The International Testing Agency (ITA) said late Wednesday that Saveh Shemshaki failed a drug test on Monday in Beijing, before competing.

"The sample was collected by the ITA under the testing authority and results management authority of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during an out-of-competition anti-doping control on 7 February 2022 in Beijing, China. The result was reported by the WADA-accredited laboratory of Beijing on 9 February 2022," the ITA said in a statement.

Saveh Shemshaki has been provisionally suspended and cannot compete.

He has the right to challenge the imposition of the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport - Anti-Doping Division (CAS ADD).

The athlete also has the right to request the analysis of the B-sample.
