Russell holds off Verstappen to win Azerbaijan GP

Mercedes' George Russell converted pole position into victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, holding off a late charge from Max Verstappen to cut Kimi Antonelli's Formula 1 championship lead.

Russell led every lap and set the fastest lap to complete a grand slam, but crossed the line just 0.1 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Verstappen after two safety-car periods wiped out a commanding advantage and set up a tense finish.

Isack Hadjar finished third on his return from a three-race injury absence, giving Red Bull two cars on the podium for the first time this year, while Charles Leclerc was fourth for Ferrari.

Antonelli recovered from 16th on the grid to take fifth and limit the damage to his championship lead, with Russell cutting his teammate's lead by 15 points. Antonelli now has 302 points to Russell's 236.

"It's amazing to be back on the top step of the podium. I want to say a big thanks to the team for continuing to believe in me through the tough moments and helped me come through it. I'm really proud to have had this weekend," said Russell, whose win was his third of the season, and his first since the Austrian Grand Prix seven races ago.

"The first half of the race felt pretty plain sailing, getting the gap. At the safety car restart with Max behind, I thought 'this is not going to be easy,' and he drove incredibly at the end of the race."

Russell had been in control from the start, quickly moving clear of McLaren's Oscar Piastri after starting on medium tyres and stretching his advantage to more than nine seconds by lap 23.

Behind him, Verstappen made rapid progress after starting eighth following a difficult qualifying session in which a power-unit problem had left his Red Bull down on power. Red Bull changed the engine ahead of the race without incurring a grid penalty.

Starting on medium tyres, Verstappen passed Lewis Hamilton and Leclerc before Hadjar allowed his teammate through into third on lap seven. But the Dutchman then spent much of the opening stint bottled up behind Piastri, with the McLaren quicker through Baku's tight middle sector and the Red Bull gaining ground on the long straight.

The complexion of the race changed on lap 31 when Alex Albon crashed at Turn 6, bringing out the safety car and allowing the leaders to make their pit stops.

Verstappen took advantage at the restart to pass Piastri for second, but the race was immediately neutralized again after a multi-car collision involving Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris.

Colapinto locked up at Turn 1 and hit Gasly, who was sent into Norris, eliminating all three. Liam Lawson also spun in the incident but was able to continue.

Russell retained the lead at the second restart, but Piastri's race unraveled on lap 40 when he locked up while defending third place from Hadjar at Turn 1 and was forced down the escape road, dropping to the rear of the field.

Hadjar inherited third, while Antonelli continued his recovery through the field and passed Hamilton for fifth on lap 43.

Verstappen, much happier after switching to soft tyres, then closed rapidly on Russell and was within half a second by lap 46. Russell briefly rebuilt his advantage to around a second before Verstappen closed again over the final laps, but the Mercedes driver held on by the narrowest of margins.

Hadjar's third place capped an impressive comeback weekend after missing the previous three races with a wrist injury.

Leclerc finished fourth ahead of Antonelli and Hamilton, while Arvid Lindblad took seventh after pipping Esteban Ocon at the line. Ocon and Ollie Bearman finished eighth and ninth, giving Haas its first double-points finish of the season, while Carlos Sainz took 10th for Williams.

The race marked the 10th edition of Formula 1 racing in Baku, which first joined the calendar as the European Grand Prix in 2016.

The championship continues next weekend with the rescheduled Bahrain Grand Prix at Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit, which will host Formula 1 for the first time since 2017.
