Police shoot sharp weapon-wielding man in Helsinki

A man equipped with sharp weapon was injured when police fired gunshot at him in a residence at Kallio in Helsinki on Sunday afternoon, Police said in a press release.

The incident took place at about 5:30 p.m. when the man was behaving threateningly at the door of the ground floor of the house at Hämeentie area.

Responding to an alarm police rushed to the spot and asked the man to surrender the weapon, but he did not pay heed to the order, said police.

At certain stage a police officer fired gun shot at the man and he sustained bullet wounds.

He was taken to hospital and police said that his condition was not life threatening.

Police, however, did not divulge the identity of the injured person.

Meanwhile, the Prosecutor's Office is investigating into the incident of using firearms by police.

The Helsinki police are also investigating into the matter as violent resistance to police officers.
