Police to monitor moose hunting during autumn

The police will step up supervision of moose hunting between 28 September and 25 October 2026, said National Police Board in a press release on Friday.

Monitoring will take place during the busiest phase of the moose hunting season, when hunting clubs will be most active.

The supervision will be carried out in cooperation with Metsähallitus, the Finnish Border Guard and Finnish Customs.

According to statistics from the Natural Resources Institute Finland, approximately 111,000 hunters participated in moose hunting in 2025, and the moose harvest amounted to 41,225 animals.

The estimated value of the game meat was approximately EUR 58 million. Hunters participating in cervid hunting accumulated more than 1.5 million cervid hunting days.

Moose hunting is subject to stricter regulation than other forms of game hunting. The use of large-calibre firearms and powerful cartridges and bullets means that supervision always involves significant safety considerations. Matters subject to supervision include sobriety, the ability to handle a firearm and compliance with safety regulations.

“Moose hunting is, for the most part, carried out responsibly, but through supervision we want to ensure that safety regulations are followed in all situations. Several hunters may be moving in the same area at the same time, which means that everyone must understand their responsibilities and handle firearms with particular care,” said Chief Superintendent of the National Police Board Tuomo Korhonen.
