Polish aircraft to support surveillance in Finland’s maritime area

As part of international cooperation coordinated by Frontex, a Polish Border Guard surveillance aircraft will support maritime surveillance in the Northern Baltic, including in the Finnish waters, said Finnish Border Guard in a press release on Wednesday.

The aircraft will commence the surveillance flights in the beginning of September and continue until the end of October.

Poland conducts the surveillance flights in connection with the Multipurpose Maritime Operation (MMO) 2026.

These flights are a part of Frontex coordinated joint operation to enhance multinational maritime surveillance in the Baltic Sea.

The flights will be conducted partially in the Finnish airspace. All flights are coordinated with Finnish Authorities.

Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency coordinates the cooperation between its Member States and supports the sharing of common situational picture.

The EU Member States in the Baltic Sea region are engaged in continuous cooperation in surveillance of the Baltic Sea. The Polish Let L-410 surveillance aircraft is operated by the Polish Border Guard.

Finnish authorities will always be informed in advance of flights stretching into our territory. This surveillance will further the shared situational awareness concerning the maritime transport as well as the maritime environment in the Baltic Sea.
