3 killed in road mishaps in Helsinki, Vantaa

Three people were killed in separate road accidents in the capital on Tuesday, police said in separate press releases.

Two pedestrians were killed when a private car knocked down them at Itäväylä area near Kulosaari in Helsinki early Tuesday night.

The accident took place at about 12:30 a.m. when the car was going from the direction of the Redi shopping centre.

The driver fled the scene after the accident, said police, quoting eyewitnesses.

The victims- a man and a woman- sustained critical wounds and died on the spot.

Police did not divulge the detail identities of the deceased but said that both of them were about 30year-olds.

Police later arrested the driver, a man in his 40s from Itäkeskus area.

Police suspected that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and investigating into the case as suspected aggravated drunk driving, aggravated manslaughter, and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety.

Meanwhile, a woman was killed when an electric scooter collided with a truck in Vantaa on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred at Lehdokkitie area at about 7:30 a.m. and the rider of the electric scooter died on the spot.

Police did not disclose the details about the accident and the identity of the deceased.

They are investigating into the incident under the criminal charges of endangering traffic safety and causing death.

Police and the Accident Investigation Board are investigating into the incidents to find out the reasons behind the accidents.
