The main opposition party in Parliament, Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) on Saturday re-elected Antti Lindtman as its Chairperson.
Lindtman has been elected the party Chair unopposed for the next two-year term at the 3-day party conference begun in Tampere, said the party in a press release.
He has been serving as the SDP Chairman since 2023.
The SDP will elect three deputy chairpersons, the secretary and the party council chair on Sunday.
Five lawmakers including two incumbents are contenting for the posts of Vice-Chairs.
The 48th party conference being held in Tampere-talo will be ended on Monday.
The party leaders are discussing together the direction the SDP should take and how they want to build the future.
In his opening remarks the SDP Chair criticised the newly enacted controversial law regarding fixed-term employment contracts and said that his party will intervene in the law, if it is voted to power in the next parliamentary elections.
The Parliament on May 20, 2026 approved the controversial bill regarding fixed-term employment contracts with the provision for allowing the employers to terminate fixed-term employment contracts of up to one year, if it is the first agreement between the employees and the employers.
He also said that the SDP will build an alternative to the policies of the present four-party- right-wing government and will create a fairer direction for Finland.
Lindtman also expressed commitment to Finland’s carbon-neutral target by 2035, which was enshrined in law during the last government led by the then SDP Chair Sanna Marin.
Meanwhile, another opposition party Vihreä Liitto (Green League) has begun its two-day conference in Turku on Saturday.
Chair of the party Sofia Virta also criticised the economic policy of the four-party alliance government led by conservative Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP) on the opening day of the conference.
