Small plane crashes into icy river in Rovaniemi

A small plane crashed into the Kemijoki River in Rovaniemi, a municipality under Lapland region on Thursday morning, police and rescue department said.

The pilot, who was alone onboard, however, managed to escape without sustaining injury.

The accident took place at about 10:00 a.m. when the aircraft landed on the ice of the river near Alakorkalo area.

Responding to an alarm rescue service people rushed to the spot and taxied the plane on the ice before sinking.

The rescue services people were trying to lift the half-submerged aircraft from the ice, said police in a press release issued at about 1:15 p.m.

Police are investigating into incident to find out the reason behind it.

Police said that the area is designated as no-fly zone and flying of unmanned aerial vehicles in the area is prohibited.
