Police recently recovered an elderly man who had been living in the basement of a detached house in Helsinki under inhuman conditions for decades, said police in a press release on Friday.

Police send the man of about 80-year-old to the appropriate authorities for care and arrested three people-two men and one woman- in connection with the incident.

Every suspect is about 60 years old and all of them are residents of Helsinki.

Police said that they conducted search at the house in northern Helsinki on January 19 based on information from another authority and found the man in poor physical condition and in need of immediate assistance.

The living space the man had been using was a windowless room, lacking access to bathing facilities, a toilet, or the ability to prepare food, said police.

After the preliminary investigation, police said that the man had moved into the space several decades ago.

The Helsinki Police are investigating into the incident to determine whether other individuals living in the same house have committed human trafficking, exploiting the man’s dependent situation and placing him in degrading conditions, potentially for financial gain.
