The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland on Tuesday summoned the Iranian Chargé d’Affaires over the ongoing violence against protesters by Iranian authorities, according to the ministry.
“Finland has summoned Iran’s Chargé d’Affaires over the escalating violence against protesters by Iranian authorities. Aggression must stop and all unjustly detained demonstrators released,” the Ministry wrote in a post on its social media platform X in the afternoon.
The Ministry also said that the right of access to information, including access to the internet, must be ensured.
Earlier in the morning, Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen in a post on her X said that she would summon the Iranian ambassador.
“Iran’s regime has shut down the internet to be able to kill and oppress in silence. This will not be tolerated. We stand with the people of Iran—women and men alike,” Valtonen added in her post.
She also said that together with the EU, Finland is exploring measures to help restore freedom to the Iranian people.
Several hundreds of people were killed during the nationwide demonstrations against the government in the country for the past two weeks.
