Mother, 3 children burnt to death in Savonlinna house fire

Four persons of a same family were burnt to death in a fire occurred at a detached house at Louhi in Savonlinna, a municipality under South Savo region in Eastern Finland on Saturday, police said in a press release on Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out at about 8:00 a.m. and engulfed the house immediately.

Responding to an alarm, rescue service people and police rushed to the spot and found four people dead in the debris.

Police suspect that the deceased were a mother and her three children, who lived in the house.

The bodies of the victims will be identified by forensic examinations later.

Rescue service people and police are investigating into the incident to find out the origin of the fire and the reason behind the deaths.

“The police will continue the technical investigation during the weekend and will investigate the reason behind the fire,” lead investigator Markku Kärpänen said in the press release, adding that the possibility of a criminal link to the incident has not been ruled out.
