Helsinki Police received reports of 10 pickpocketing incidents at Christmas markets in Helsinki during the last weekend, said police in a press release on Tuesday.
The thefts occurred in the area around Senate Square and elsewhere in central Helsinki.
Police increased surveillance at Christmas markets, particularly in areas popular with tourists.
"Professional thieves have targeted Asian tourists. Hundreds of euros in cash were stolen from wallets, and unauthorized purchases or bank transfers were made using several credit cards. The suspects will be deported from Finland under the Aliens Act, as they are considered a threat to public order and safety," said Detective Superintendent of Helsinki Police Mikko Mikkinen.
Police warned the people, particularly the tourists of possible incidents of pickpocketing in the city centre area.
People were urged to keep an eye on wallet or bag and to make sure that they are in a safe place.
Police also suggested to avoid storing valuables in back pockets and the outer pockets of backpack, where it is easy to grab things.
If the tourists see suspicious activity, they are suggested to call the emergency number 112 and always file a crime report with police, if something is stolen from them.
