Haavisto announces bid for Presidential polls

Veteran politician of Vihreä Liitto (Green Party) and out outgoing Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on Thursday announced his candidature for the Finland´s upcoming presidential election scheduled for January 2024.

Haavisto made the announcement from a press conference saying that he will contest in the election as a candidate of an election alliance.

"It will make easier for the people who are not supporters of the Vihreä Liitto to join the election campaign," Haavisto said at the press conference.

He viewed that foreign policy issues will dominate the presidential election.

Sensing possible difficult situation in future, he expressed his optimism that country people will face the situation together.

"Finland may have hard times ahead that we have to be able to face together," said Haavisto.

Vihreä Liitto Chairperson Maria Ohisalo welcomed the decision of Haavisto and urged the people to elect him the next President of Finland.

“Let's do it. Haavisto the next president of Finland,” Ohisalo wrote in a twitter post in Finnish, adding that Finland needs an experienced foreign policy leader who will unite the people.

According to different surveys conducted during the recent period, Haavisto is the most favourite candidate for the next presidential elections.

Earlier, he contested in the two previous presidential elections and became runner-up every time.
