President Sauli Niinistö on Monday congratulated his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan after he won Sunday’s runoff election, according to the President office.

Niinistö sent a letter to Erdogan to congratulate the Turkish President on his re-election, the President office wrote in a twitter post.

“President Niinisto has sent a letter to President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan to congratulate him on his re-election,” said the twitter post.

Erodgan has been reelected Turkey's president in the runoff presidential election in Turkey on Sunday.

Erdogan won 52.14 percent of votes in the election against his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who garnered 47.86 percent of the votes.

In the first round of the presidential election on May 14, Erdogan earned 49.52 percent of the vote while Kilicdaroglu received 44.88 percent.

Neither secured more than 50 percent of the votes needed to call a winner in the first round, therefore an election runoff was held for the first time for the presidency.
