President Sauli Niinistö on Thursday met with the President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen at his official residence Mäntyniemi in Helsinki and discussed various issues including Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and European security, said an official press release.

Niinistö stated that the European Union has responded to Russia’s war with strength and resolve. The EU has been unified both in its support to Ukraine and in its response to Russia.

It is of utmost importance to maintain this unity. Finland is fully committed to the EU’s sanctions policy and will continue its support to Ukraine for as long as is needed, he said.

Niinistö and von der Leyen strongly condemned Russia’s illegal attacks on Ukraine’s civil infrastructure.

Russia continues to deliberately destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as the winter is coming, thus causing immense human suffering.

The EU and Finland as a part of it will continue their support to maintain and repair Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
