Massive pipeline damage disrupts water supply in Helsinki

Massive damage occurred in water supply pipelines at different areas in Helsinki downtown on Sunday morning resulting flood on city roads, said the Helsinki Rescue Department and Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY).

The breakage of a large main line in Kallio has caused several pipe breaks at Fleminginkatu, Hämeentie, Rautalammintie, Kumpulantaival and Bulevardi in the city, said HSY in a press release.

The damage disrupted water supply and road communications at the localities.

After the break in water distribution, sediment was loosen from the pipeline walls due to changes in the flow direction and pressure fluctuation.

The authority urged the dwellers to let the water run from all taps until it is clear, if the water is brown or murky.

HSY also urged the people to informed the authority, if the water doesn’t clear by letting it run for 10 minutes.

Earlier, in the morning the Helsinki Rescue Department received several alarms on flooding and damage in different areas.

Water flooded roads and ground collapsed following the pipeline damage between Satamaradankatu and Aleksis Kiven katu in Vallila, the Helsinki Rescue Department wrote in a twitter post in the morning.

The Rescue Department received information that the water spread to properties and other roads at the adjacent areas.

Responding to the alarms the Rescue Services people rushed to the spots and started repairment work to restore normalcy in the water supply.
