PPG mishap kills 1 in Rautavaara, 2 drown in Mikkeli, Salo

One person was killed in a Powered paragliding (PPG) accident in Rautavaara on Saturday while two others were drowned in separate incidents in Mikkeli and Salo on Friday, said police in separate press releases on Saturday.

Police said that the PPG accident took place when it fell down on the ground following mechanical failure at Rautavaara airport under North Savo region on Saturday afternoon.

Pilot of the PPG, a 42-year-old man was killed in the accident on the spot.

Police, however, did not divulge the identity of the deceased and investigating into the matter to find out the reason behind the accident

Meanwhile, a 55-year-old man, who went to catch fish in Kyyvesi lake in Mikkeli on Friday was found dead on Saturday.

Police said that rescue service people responding to a call from the wife of the victim rushed to the spot and conducted extensive search late Friday night. Although they recovered the boat used by the man, they failed to find out him.

Later Defense Forces helicopter joined the search on Saturday morning and found the body at the nearby area from where the boat was recovered on the previous night.

Police did not suspect link to any crime in connection with the incident.

In another incident, one person was drowned in the Salonjoki river in Salo on Friday afternoon.

A passer-by found the body floating in the water near the bank of the river and informed the police at about 12:40 pm. Responding to the call, members of the law enforcing agency rushed to the spot and recovered the body from the area near Rummunlyöjänkatu and Meritalonkatu.

The identity of the deceased could not be known but police said that the age of the dead, wearing jeans and T-shirt with dark hoodie, will be in between 40 and 50 years.

The police are investigating to both the incidents to find out the reasons behind the deaths.
