1 killed in level crossing crash in Alavus

One person was killed when a private car collided with a train at a level crossing at Alavus in South Ostrobothnia region on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The accident took place at about 2:20 pm when the train knocked down the private car at the Hakojärvi level crossing. Driver of the car died on the spot.

Police did not divulge detail of the accident and the identity of the deceased immediately.

The accident disrupted rail communication between Seinäjoki and Jyväskylä and passengers were transported by bus and taxi.

According to the Finnish Transport Agency and national railway operator VR, till August 2021 at least 36 people have been killed in level crossing accidents in the country since 2013.
