EU Foreign, Defence Ministers agree on strategic compass

Foreign Affairs Ministers and Defence Ministers of the European Union on Monday agreed on the strategic compass with the view ensure deeper cooperation, according to Foreign minister Pekka Haavisto.

Haavisto in a twitter post on the twitter account of “Finland in EU” also termed the EU Strategic Compass as a strong commitment to deeper cooperation.

“FM @Haavisto: Pleased that there is an agreement on the EU Strategic Compass. Strong commitment to deeper cooperation,” said the Finland in EU twitter post after the joint meeting of the Foreign Ministers and Defence Ministers held in Brussels on Monday

Markku Keinänen, Permanent Representative of Finland to the EU also in his twitter post wrote that it was an important step in deepening EU’s defence cooperation.

Keinänen termed the agreement as a wide-ranging, ambitious and concrete document.

In their joint session, the Foreign and Defence ministers adopted the Strategic Compass for security and defence cooperation in the EU.

The matter will be discussed by the EU Heads of State or Government at the European Council on 24 to 25 March 2022.

The Strategic Compass is a strategic steering document for the EU's security and defence cooperation that sets objectives for the next 5 to 10 years.
