Niinistö, Biden talk about Ukraine over phone

President Sauli Niinistö on Monday held a phone conversation with his counterpart of the United States Joseph R. Biden and discussed various bilateral and international issues including the worrisome situation at the borders of Ukraine, said the President Office in a press release.

The presidents considered it important to cooperate in order to find a diplomatic resolution to the tense situation at the borders of Ukraine.

In the context of the conversation on the bilateral relations between Finland and the United States Niinistö told Biden about the main pillars of Finnish security policy.

Niinistö said that he appreciates that NATO maintains its Open Door policy. In addition, Niinistö opened his thinking on the Helsinki Spirit to Biden.

The Finnish President also expressed his condolences on the loss of lives caused by the tornados in the United States.

Earlier on Monday, Niinistö had a phone conversation with Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The topic of that conversation was Mitsotakis’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi in the preceding week.

On Tuesday, Niinistö is due to have a telephone conversation with Putin.
