5 drown in country during weekend

At least five people were drowned in separate incidents at different parts of the country on Saturday and Sunday, police said.

An elderly man was drowned in the Mansikkanokka beach in Kemi. People found the 68-year-old man floating in shallow water on Saturday and rescued him. They also tried to resuscitate him.

Responding to an alarm, the rescue service people and police rushed to the spot and send the person to hospital where he died on Sunday.

A 76-year-old man had been boating in a lake in Varkaus. He was downed in the lake on Sunday morning.

Police and Rescue service people rushed to the spot and recovered the body from the lake.

The police are investigating into the matter to find out the reason behind the death.

Another elderly man was drowned in Enäjärvi lake in Suomusjärvi on Saturday.

Police said that the accident occurred when the man of about 80 years was riding a rowing boat in the lake.

Local people who went to the lake for swimming found the man and informed the law enforcing agencies.

The Police and rescue service members rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

Meanwhile, a man of 52 years was found dead in the water of Kurkilammi at Mäntyharju in Southern Savonia on Saturday afternoon.

Responding to the call, members of the Rescue Service and law enforcing agency rushed to the spot and recovered the person. They tried to resuscitate but found the person dead.

The Police did not suspect any link to criminal act in connection with the incident as it was considered as an incident of drowning at the initial stage.

Members of the law enforcing agency, however, will investigate into the matter further to know detail in this regard.

Another man was downed after falling into a swimming pool of a summer house at Kurikka in Southern Ostrobothnia on Saturday afternoon.

Members of the Southern Ostrobothnia Rescue Department and the Ostrobothnian Police rushed to the spot responding to an alarm at about 2:30 pm.

The Rescue service people conducted search and recovered the body of the sunken person from the water.

The police are investigating into the incident to find out the reason behind the death.

They, however, did not divulge anything more about the incident or the victim at this stage of the investigation.

On July 3, one person was killed in an accident between two boats in water in Kokkola.

Earlier, at least eight people were drowned at different parts in the country during the Midsummer in the late June.

Out of the deaths, four were reported on Midsummer Eve on June 25 while the rest four on the Midsummer day on June 26.
