Oil spill was found near a ship anchored at Neste Oil refinery in Porvoo in Kilpilahti Harbour on Saturday.

The Eastern Uusimaa Rescue Service in cooperation with the Border Guard, the fire service of Neste, and port staff are working to bring the situation under control, said the authority of Kilpilahti Harbour.

Work continued on Sunday to detect the source and estimate the volume of the leakage detected on Saturday afternoon at about 3:00 pm when cargo was being unloaded from the ship.

The process, however, may take several days as it was attached to ice floes, which must be mechanically removed from the water, reported the national broadcaster Yle.

The oil spillage appeared to be limited to the area around a tanker docked in the port, the Yle report quoted experts as saying.

Neste Oil Products Production Director Jori Sahlsten, however, claimed that the type of oil in the water is different from that stored in the visiting tanker moored in the port, added the Yle.
