A suspected robber sustained bullet wound while trying to make an escape after robbing a store in Vantaa on Wednesday afternoon.

The police said they had to shoot at the armed criminal as he refused to surrender his weapon despite repeated orders.

The robbery took place at about 4:00 PM when the alleged robber entered the shop in Rajatorppa area and took valuables and goods at the point of a bladed weapon.

The suspect also threatened the storekeeper and managed to escape.

Responding to a call, police rushed to the spot and chased the alleged robber and found him along with a bladed weapon on the street.

The police asked him to surrender the weapon but he did not pay heed to the police order prompting the law enforcers to use gun to stop him, said the police in a press release.

The person sustained bullet wound in his leg. He was taken to hospital immediately, said the police, adding that his life is not in risk.

Police cordoned off the scene on Nuijatie during the operation, in which several police patrols took part.

The police are investigating the alleged robbery and the violent resistance to an on-duty police official using firearm. The findings of the investigation will be reviewed by the Office of the Prosecutor General as per the law.
