Flag hoisted at half-mast to mourn student murder

The nation on Thursday mourned the female student of Savo vocational school in Kuopio who was murdered during Tuesday’s mayhem.

National flags were hoisted at half-mast to pay respect to the victim, a Ukrainian national who was stabbed to death by a 25-year-old original Finn named Joel Otto Aukusti Marin.

The police, however, have not disclosed the name and identity of the victim yet.

Investigation into the violent attack at the Savo Vocational College in Kuopio was carried on Tuesday through Wednesday. The police were also allowed to question the man suspected of the attack, said a police press release.

“The suspect told the police about the course of events on Tuesday. For the purpose of securing the investigation, the contents of the questioning are not disclosed. The suspect will be interviewed several times later,” said Head of Investigation Detective Chief Inspector Olli Töyräs of the National Board of Investigation.

The police requested for the remand of the suspect for the murder and the request for remand will be heard at the District Court of North Savo on Friday, said the police.

“Criminal investigation will be carried on during the coming days with extensive questionings, forensic examinations and reviews of received tips and material,” Töyräs said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Antti Rinne is scheduled to visit Kuopio on Friday, said an official press release.

Rinne will meet for a discussion with representatives of different authorities, the City of Kuopio, the vocational college and young people, as well as people taking part in the crisis work and the medical treatment of the victims.

After the discussion, the prime minister will be available to meet with the people at Kohtaamo at Apaja Shopping Centre.

The Ukrainian woman was killed and 10 others were injured in a violent incident on Tuesday at Savo vocational school in Kuopio.
