Two people died in an apartment fire in Vantaa on Saturday morning.

The fire destroyed completely a unit on the third floor of an eight-floor building, but did not spread or damage other apartments at all.

The victims were found dead in their apartment, and the cause of the fire was being investigated.

Harry Hayrinen, a duty inspector at the regional rescue service, told local media that in modern apartment buildings in Finland, each apartment is structurally capsulated in terms of fire safety.

Hayrinen deplored that some inhabitants of the building put themselves at risk by leaving their apartments and going to the stairwell.

"This should not be done as there can be smoke in the stairwell. People should stay in their own apartments in these modern buildings and signal their whereabouts," Hayrinen advised.
