Last week during intensified monitoring of heavy traffic, the police detected 177 driving and rest-time violations and 46 tachograph violations. In addition, four cases of tachograph manipulation were detected, said a police bulletin.

The journeys of 16 vehicles were halted due to the poor condition of the vehicle, and a total of 63 penalties were issued for such offences. Penalties were also issued for violations related to the faulty securing of loads (46) and the driver’s and the vehicle’s paperwork (18). A total of 7 wanted persons and one drunk driver were also stopped during the intensified monitoring.

In addition, 15 cases of the driver using a mobile phone or other communication device while driving were detected.

“The number of violations detected despite the fact that advance notice was again given of the intensified monitoring demonstrates the need for police surveillance,” says Chief Superintendent Heikki Kallio from the National Police Board.

In principle, no violations of any kind should be detectable in police surveillance.

The nationwide intensified police monitoring campaign on heavy traffic last week from 22 to 28 July was joined by the Southeast Finland Border Guard with surveillance of border crossing points.

Over the week, some 2,400 work hours were devoted to inspecting a total of 1,411 heavy vehicles. Of the inspected vehicles, 1,158 were Finnish and 253 foreign. A total of 40 coaches were also included.

With regard to freight traffic, the particular attention was given to compliance with driving and rest times, the securing of loads and condition of the vehicle.
