Two persons were wounded and taken to hospital in a shooting that took place in downtown Helsinki on Tuesday afternoon, Helsinki police said.

The two wounded were not in critical condition, according to the police.

The police said they have detained one person and his role in the shooting was being investigated.

According to local media reports, a white van had purposely rammed into an automobile. Eyewitnesses told local media that the shooter had walked away without haste, with a pistol in his hands, before the arrival of the police.

Local media said there was a third person in the targeted automobile, who was not injured.

The location was along the Hietalahdenkatu in the Kamppi district of downtown Helsinki. Police sent armoured vehicles to the area and the corner remained cordoned off.

The police said they will give no more details until on Wednesday at noon.
