Many lucky people living in the northern region of Europe spotted the northern lights due to enhanced solar activity during the weekend, reported Xinhua.

An "extreme" geomagnetic storm caused the lights, also known as aurora borealis, to be more visible on Friday and Saturday evening, according to meteorologists.

Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere around the magnetic poles.

Millions of people across the northern hemisphere, including some parts of Europe and the United States, have seen the rare phenomenon during the weekend.
