Around two dozen climate activists in Berlin temporarily blocked two roads in the south and north of the German capital on Monday.

According to the organizers, the slip road to a motorway in the southern Steglitz district and another road in the northern Pankow district were affected.

Police said they attended both locations and had taken away activists who were standing or sitting on the roads. A police spokesman said 13 participants were temporarily taken into custody.

Photographs on Twitter showed a small group of people in high-visibility vests sitting on the tarmac.

Behind them are some of the activists who made headlines before the national election in September when they went on hunger strike in an effort to pressure the incoming government to increase measures against climate change.

Two young activists achieved a public meeting with then-chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz about the climate crisis. The meeting took place in November before Scholz took over as German leader.

The activists are demanding a law against food waste and more sustainable agricultural policies from the federal government.

The emissions associated with agriculture could easily be reduced, explained the group, which calls itself Uprising of the Last Generation.

The demonstrators carried banners reading "Save food - save lives."

Group spokeswoman Carla Hinrichs said: "This is just the beginning. We will be back."
